Once upon a dream

Half awake - half asleep, torn between the dragons and the deep
Racing moments, fleeting thoughts, shattered fragments of what never was

"Step into my web" said the spider to the fly
"No" said I, "I would fly but you would have me still!"
"Not at all" she replied, "I so declare I positively never will"

So I stepped on her web and got stuck as a fly, never soaring, never free nor again flying high

"Why?" said I, "you promised I would live!!"
"Alas" she said, "I am a spider and I can but offer you what all spiders give"

Her fangs pierced my arm as I pondered all this, her eyes full of sadness yet clouded with bliss
I awoke with a sigh - still alive, wide awake
While etched on my arms were the marks of a snake
